This provided personnel access to rebuild the parapets and refurbish the brick arches on the bridge.

Possession times were limited on the contract so the All-round Layher bridge system sections were pre-built in SRKs yard in Somerset. The sections were then transported 200 miles to the Bedford site and craned into position on previously built towers either side of the railway line and in the central 10ft. wide section. There was no room for error on the positioning of the towers, laser measuring equipment was introduced to get the final levels and distance between each tower.
